Springvale Road [Sheffield | Extension]

DesignXY Ltd director, Kris Barry, provides services as architect for the extension, remodelling, as well as attic and basement conversion, of a large family home on Springvale Road, Sheffield.

There was no lead-in time on this project, picking up from a previous architect, to re-think an extension to a Victorian terrace that was already underway.

The Client’s aims were to create something different which resulted in a beautiful synergy of traditional and contemporary aesthetics for the new extension. The Client requested specific support with the detailing and finish of the project, although some of the key design elements for the arrangement between parts of the extension also needed re-designing. Progression of the project when we got involved was at risk, given the potential concerns of statutory authorities.

The modern aesthetic is most strongly emphasised around the main entrance.

Large areas of glazing to the front of the extension make it open and welcoming with the side elevations being intentionally quite solid. ‘Punched’ windows are used to bring daylights into the space, while reinforcing the contemporary style. The resultant bespoke details provide clean lines and a modern aesthetic enclosing a highly insulated envelope.
